about the project
In New York City, all the trees on The Bowery were cut down in the 1970s so that they wouldn’t interfere with the loading and unloading of merchandise for the restaurant supply stores. The trees were were in the way of commerce.
In the early aughts, Mayor Bloomberg established the ambitious Million Trees program, hoping to plant new trees in all five boroughs. Anyone could request a new tree to be planted in front of their address. At 108 Bowery, a few of us did so, without knowing about the others. So we got a tree, the only tree on the street in all directions.
In Wisconsin, developers and contractors appear to cut down all the established trees on a property so that they won’t interfere with the building trades and efficient construction. The new homes are huge, pretty nice, pretty expensive, and stand naked without shade or greenery or even visiting birds.
tree gallery project wants to support the trees that support us. We want to shower them with love and respect and thanks. And mourn the trees that have been taken from us.
